SUBDUE MY DUST
Working with Screen Yorkshire and Sheffield Museums, we had the brief of ‘capturing colour’ with the aim of making a 3-minute film to complement the John Ruskin Exhibition at the Millennium Gallery.
John Ruskin is quoted to have said “There is not a leaf in the world which has the same colour visable over its whole surface”. We took this as a metaphor to say that no two people are alike and that everyone is unique and has their own personal story and history to be told. As such, we wanted this concept of individuality and self-expression to be our main auditory and visual message throughout the film, showcasing that in society, we often use colour to create an intended image, a personal statement, that consciously or unconsciously tells the world about who we are as an individual.
With a narrative piece centered around multiple of Ruskin’s writings, we see Val being transformed through makeup into a confident, mythical creature.
